Wiggles and Roadbumps

First things first.  I received an AWESOME gift in the mail from Mom Kalahurka today.  For my birthday, she made me a beautiful maternity sweater.  It fits perfectly, and I enjoyed wearing it to dinner this evening.  Here is a photo (click on the thumbnail to see a larger version). The photo also serves as a belly update.  It's beginning to be noticeable.  Anyway, thanks Mom for the great sweater!  Baby and I are really going to enjoy wearing this!!!

Now, on to the update.  Another week gone.  We are now almost 19 weeks into this adventure.  I have a couple pregnancy landmarks to report this week.  One is really good and one is really good to have behind me.  I think I'll start with the really good stuff.

Since my last update, I felt the baby move for the first time.

I think it was last Sunday night (September 6) when I first felt a little wiggly feeling inside that was like nothing that I have EVER felt before.  This was not gas.  This was not indigestion.  This was definitely baby movement!!  I've read a bunch of pregnancy websites that describe this feeling as a "flutter," but I don't think that's accurate.  It's more like something poking you from the inside.  I envision little toes or elbows stretching in there.  It is totally cool to feel baby moving around.  The wiggling is more noticeable and more frequent every day.  This is the REALLY fun stuff.

And next for the stuff that I'm really glad to have behind me.  Last weekend I survived my first (and what I hope will be my last) pregnancy roadbump.

Some of you who have known me for a while are aware that I've had some issues with past lung collapses.  Last weekend, I sneezed and blew another leak.  This was not the worst leak that I've ever had and I would have otherwise probably just waited until Monday to see my doctor about it.  But because we didn't know how it would affect the baby, we decided to go ahead and call my OBGYN to ask him what I should do.  He said I needed to go to the hospital and have it checked (apparently baby needs more oxygen than I do).

We did as instructed and it turned out that I had indeed blown a "moderate sized" lung leak.  It was pretty uncomfortable there for a while, but I do relatively well with only one lung and never really had trouble oxygenating despite the partial collapse.  The worst of it was that I had to spend a large portion of my weekend in the stinky hospital, waiting for things to reinflate.  They finally let me out late Monday morning, and things feel pretty much back to normal now.

I guess that this is the one problem that I had anticipated and was most afraid of.  As it turns out, it happened and it wasn't that bad.  We now know that I can sufficiently oxygenate both baby and myself with just one fully functional lung.  We also got an inside sneak peek at the place where our baby will be born.

Now my main concern is that my OBGYN may not let me attempt natural childbirth for fear that I'll blow another leak (he had already mentioned c-section just based on past history with this problem).  I would really like to do things the old fashioned way if at all possible.  I guess we will just cross that bridge when we come to it.  In the mean time, maybe someone will invent some human fix-a-flat . . . .

Since I have been posting a lot of photos of stuff going on inside me on this blog, I decided to to post this old photo of one of my prior lung collapses (1999, I think).  This was one of the BIG ones where they eventually had to cut out the leaky parts.  The photo shows the cutting and the stapling.  My happy thought is that this weekend's leak didn't necessitate any arts and crafts on Steph.

Well that's it for now.  The good and the bad.  The fun and the annoying.  A really FANTASTIC maternity sweater!!  (Thanks again Mom :)

Stay tuned for more adventures to come.
