Traditions

Week 29

The holidays are here and that has me thinking about family traditionsFamily traditions have been explained by at least one social scientist as follows:

“Whatever its biological inheritance from its parents and other ancestors, the child receives also from them a heritage of attitudes, sentiments, and ideals which may be termed the family tradition, or the family culture."
Since we are about to be a family, I thought it might be time to start thinking about some family traditions of our own.  I don't think our plans need to be all that serious -- including "attitudes, sentiments and ideals."  But it would be fun to come up with some traditions that the Bill & Steph Kalahurkas will implement.  If, in the process, these become defining moments in our "family culture" . . . well, so be it.

Anyway, Bill and I had fun discussing the subject over a nice dinner date last Wednesday night (our official 1 and 1/2 year anniversary).  We managed to come up with a couple of ideas that I believe have potential.

  • The Kalahurkey Turkeys.  We decided that it might be a good annual Thanksgiving tradition to run the local Turkey Trot wearing turkey costumes.  Admittedly, this is not an original idea.  Mom Kalahurka, Annie and Katie did it a few years ago.  It looked like great fun though, and we are lucky to have access to Mom Kalahurka and her wonderful costume abilities.  Bill and I (and Amelia) did run the Turkey Trot this year, but we didn't dress up.  We did not know that this was going to be our tradition in time, and so all of the Kalahurka turkey costumes were in Kansas City.  Next year we expect to be in Kansas City for Thanksgiving, so hopefully we will be better prepared.
  • The Royals Road Trip.  We decided that it would be a good annual spring/summer tradition to take a weekend and go see an out-of-town Royals game.  Bill and I (and Amelia) went to see the Royals play the Houston Astros this past summer, and we had a lot of fun.  We want our kids to enjoy a good baseball game (complete with peanuts and hot dogs) as much as we do.  Figured this might be a good way to get things started.

Well, those are the only two potential Kalahurka family traditions that we were able to come up with over a single semi-anniversary dinner.  I hope there will be many more to add to the list, but these two are a good start.

29 weeks and counting.  Only 10 more weeks until we finally get to meet our Amelia in person.  It seems strange that I carry her with me all day and feel her moving all the time -- she is so close, but so much about her is still a complete mystery.

Next week we start "Prepared Childbirth Classes."  That should be interesting . . . or scary.  I'll let you know how it goes.
