Anniversary

[UPDATED PHOTOS BELOW]

Today is our 2nd anniversary.  Instead of getting a babysitter and enjoying a nice dinner out, or even enjoying a pleasant evening at home with the family, I'm on a plane to Los Angeles for a shareholders' meeting.  The bright spot to all of this was supposed to be that I was going to get to spend the night in a pillow-top hotel bed and enjoy my first full night of sleep since Amelia was born.  Due to some delays at the airport, it looks like I'm going to get in about 2am Texas time.  I've still got some work to finish up and e-mail out when I get there.  So much for the full night's sleep . . . . I guess now the bright spot is that I'm used to functioning on a few hours rest.

Okay, enough complaining.  Let's talk about some of the good things that have happened recently.  Bill graduated last weekend.  His parents came down from Kansas City for the ceremony.  Amelia wore her matching regalia and was the star of the show.  We had a very nice weekend with Mom & Dad Kalahurka, including attending several graduation gatherings and one cook-out in our back yard with Bill's advisor.  We also had a brief visit from our good friend Jasper.  It was a busy weekend, and it passed quickly.  Too quickly, in my opinion.  Below are some fun photos from the weekend.

Amelia's new thing for this week is grabbing her feet.  She likes to sit in her chair and reach over to grab them with her hands.  She thinks its fun.  She doesn't seem to be quite as interested in grabbing her feet when they have socks on them though.  With the socks, she just stares at them with a perplexed look.  "What happened to my toes?!?"  She also likes to play a new game with her Dad (and now with Kermit the puppet) called "Arms Up."  This game is a little hard to explain.  You just have to see it.  I'll try to post a video in the next couple of weeks.

I'm already looking forward to getting home to Miss Amelia tomorrow night -- to hold her little warm body close and feel her fuzzy little head beneath my chin.  That's the good stuff.

You know, before Amelia, I never fully understood how strong the bond is between mother and baby.  I was trying to explain it to one of my co-workers the other day.  The best analogy I can think of is that of an addiction.  There is an actual physical need to be with her.  For the first few hours that I'm away, everything is fine.  Then I start to think about her and it's a bit distracting.  After a few more hours, it's hard to think about anything else.  I get ancy, and start thinking crazy things (like now -- "What if I get to Los Angeles, we have another 9/11 event and I can't get home to her??).  It eventually gets to the point where you almost have to take deep breaths to prevent having some sort of panic attack.  The only thing that helps is to call home and have Bill tell me how she's doing -- hear her coo or fuss in the background.  I remember thinking that my Mom was totally nuts for worrying about crazy things.  Now I think I understand.  It's a hormonal, mommy thing, but it's VERY real.

I'm also finding that traveling for work is logistically harder.  You have to pack the pump, find a place to pump, and figure out how to store, keep refrigerated and transport that which you pump.  Our flight out of Austin was delayed and I had to run from one plane to another in Las Vegas with no time to deal with the issue there, so it's been a little too long and it's starting to get uncomfortable.  The four crying infants in the rows around me are not helping the situation any . . . . my body thinks that they are hungry and is giving me the means to feed them (feels like enough for all of them!)

Woops -- I'm complaining again. I hope all you readers know that, however much complaining I do here, My Amelia is TOTALLY worth it.
