Bill on Proper Parenting

Blog by Bill (aka "Daddy"):

On Thursday, I picked up Amelia a couple of hours early from day care, and she and I went to Central Market. In addition to lots of delicious food, Central Market has a large play ground with jungle gyms and slides and so forth.

I was about to put on a clinic in bad parenting.

To begin with, I forgot to bring Amelia’s diaper bag. I often pick up Amelia from preschool and then head to the nearby playground, and I don’t bother to bring any supplies, because I usually only plan on staying for about 15 minutes. I knew that this adventure was going to last a couple of hours, but I still forgot to bring her bag. Genius.

We arrived at Central Market, and we went to order some Gelato. I would have probably spoiled her dinner, but it turns out that Amelia has more self restraint than I do when it comes to ice cream. She enjoyed the gelato, that’s for sure, but after consuming a reasonable amount of it, she started squirming around, and was ready to get up and run around on the playground equipment. I can’t remember a time when I would leave any unfinished ice cream on the table, so I was impressed. She looked at me as if to say, “Hey fat ass, we can’t just sit around and eat ice cream all afternoon.”

We headed over to the playground. Amelia gets around pretty well for a fourteen month old. She’ll climb up ramps and steps and through the tubes, and she’ll even go down the slides. She went down her favorite slide a couple of times. I noticed that she would come to a stop at the end of the slide before hitting the ground. On her third time down, I assumed this would happen again, and I think she did too. However, this time she went off the end of the slide. Her feet hit the ground and her momentum pulled her upper body forward, and she face-planted. She got up screaming and looking at me as if to say, “Hey a-hole, it’s your job to catch me.” It was actually a little bit funny. Apparently her mouth was open and her lips still sticky from ice cream, because she had a shredded wood chip goatee. Luckily, one of the nearby mom’s who actually knows how to rear children offered us a baby wipe, and I cleaned off her wood chip goatee.

We walked around the nearby pond to regain our composure. Looking at the turtles and ducks and doggies was good therapy. We went back to the playground. I was hoping that she would go on the slide again. I would take this as a sign of forgiveness. She willingly took a couple more runs on the slide, and I was happy. Good thing about Amelia, she may scream bloody murder for high crimes like changing her shirt or putting her in a car seat, but she doesn’t hold a grudge, even for actual transgressions

Steph's Note:  Below are this week's photos.  The first couple show Amelia enjoying the new "bean bag" that we got for her room (we moved her rocker to Billy's room).  The other photos show our adventures from Friday at the rodeo.  As you can see, Amelia really liked the petting zoo!
