BABY'S FIRST "PHOTO"

Today was a very big day.  I was scheduled for my first ultraound.  Because we've been working with the fertility docs, instead of my regular OBGYN, they take a few extra steps to check the baby during early stages of pregnancy.  I've been having blood tests every week (if not more frequently) since we first found out about Baby Kalahurka.  So far, the hormone levels have been increasing steadily (along with that annoying nauseous feeling in my tummy).  These are all good signs though, and so I was optimistic, but still anxious about this first ultrasound.

The doc told us that, at 7 weeks, we should be able to see the baby's heartbeat.  A heartbeat is a really good sign of a viable pregnancy.  If we see it, then our chances of miscarriage drop to around 5-10% (instead of the early 33% chance of a woman my age).  If we don't see it, then there's a pretty good chance that the pregnancy is not viable and a miscarriage will eventually follow.  No pressure Baby!

Well, turns out that the anxiety was unwarranted.  Below is our first "photo" of Baby Kalahurka.  The top photo shows the baby (not much more than a little blotch) and the bottom shows its heartbeat -- 126 bpm (which the doc says is normal and good).  It was pretty amazing to watch the little heart go "woosh woosh."  Suddenly this idea that a little person is growing inside of me became much more real.  YIKES!

I looked over at Bill and he was sporting a wide grin.  This was VERY good news.  Now we can relax and start thinking more seriously about this parenting thing that's looming ahead.
