First Father's Day

Sunday was Bill's first Father's Day.  We tried to make it a special day by letting him sleep in.  When he woke up, we met him with gifts (shirts to wear when he starts his new teaching job -- not the proverbial Father's Day necktie, but close).  We also let him enjoy a long morning run.

In the afternoon, we all took a family outing to The Domain for lunch and to stroll around and shop (well, mostly just window shop).  We did end up buying a few books at the bookstore, but mostly we just enjoyed being out and about. Afterwards, I spoke to my Dad on the phone and Bill spoke to his Grandpa.  We also Skyped with Poppi and Puter.  Overall, a very nice Father's Day.

On a slightly different, but somewhat related note -- this weekend I attended a memorial service for the grandmother of one of my very good friends (her Dad's mom had passed away at the age of 92).  At the service, my friend's Dad (who was also my childhood softball coach) gave a really nice talk about his Mom.  He started by saying something like this -- "If you reach the end of this life and your kids can stand up and say that you were a good parent, that is when you'll know that you have succeeded."  He added that his Mom had been a good mother.

A year ago, that remark would have sailed right over my head.  This year was a different story.  His comment struck a chord with me and I've been thinking about it a lot since then.  Someday when I am gone, will Amelia be able to say the same thing about me?  I hope so.  I guess I should probably keep thinking about Coach's advice.  If I focus and put in enough hard work and effort, it just might come true.  Funny isn't it?  Just when I thought I knew everything (how to catch a high fly, how to lay down a bunt, how to throw a stealing runner out at second . . . ), I found out that Coach still had a thing or two left to teach me.

So back to Father's Day.  One of the many reasons why I love Bill is that I know he will be a good father to Amelia.  No doubt that Amelia will quickly recognize how wonderful he is.  The biggest indication of this truth is simply his interest in her.  He notices each of her new tricks and seems to enjoy reporting them to me over dinner every night.  He talks to her.  He teaches her things (patiently, because she is not so good at learning things yet).  The other day he announced that she "needed new toys," and so he led a family outing to Babies-R-Us, where he evaluated the merit of numerous toys and placed the most promising of them in our basket for Amelia.  No question, Bill is going to be a good father.  I just hope that I can do as well at my job.  Maybe I'll just follow his lead.

Okay, so here is what you have been waiting for.  Below are some Daddy & Me photos of Amelia and Bill on Father's Day.  Also below is a short video of Amelia showing Bill her newest tricks.  Enjoy!

This is a photo of Amelia's newest sleeping position.  I put her to bed on her back, but she doesn't stay there for long.  She prefers to sleep with her butt in the air . . .  funny kid.
