July 30, 2009 Little Stevie #1 is twelve weeks today. We had an
appointment for "first trimester screenings" where they assess the
baby's risk for Down Syndrome and Trisomy 18. From what I
understand, this is pretty standard testing for women who are of
"advanced maternal age." At 35, I'm considered advanced. Anyway, the fun part about this appointment was that we got to
peek in on the baby again. Bill and I were pretty amazed at
the changes over the last three weeks. Baby is looking much
more human, and much less like a tadpole. Its head was clearly
distinguishable from the rest of its body. Also, we got a
pretty clear view of arms, hands, baby's head moving and the
heartbeat. Really amazing. Doc said that the measurements he took were within normal range,
and not indicating any problems with the baby. We won't be
totally in the clear until the blood tests come back next week, but
for now things look really good. Below are the photos: While we were in
the waiting room, I was reading one of the many available pregnancy
magazines and saw an advertisement for a home gender test that you
can do after ten weeks -- available at Walgreen's and supposedly 90%
accurate. We stopped at Walgreen's on the way home.
Probably a waste of money because the instructions in the box says
that it's 90% accurate in the lab, but only 80% accurate in the home
because some people don't do the test correctly. I will
probably screw it up and 80% is not exactly conclusive. I plan
to take it tomorrow morning. I'll let you know how all of that
turns out. |
