Amelia's First Birthday!!

Boy. I’m beat!  We had a fun, but exhausting weekend in Kansas City for Amelia’s first birthday and also for Double Digit Adventure 2011.  If you are not familiar with Double Digit Adventure, I’ll fill you in.  Double Digit Adventure has become a bit of a tradition with my nieces and nephews (the Ellison Cousins) who have reached an age that can be reflected in double digits – that is, age 10 or above. This year, we had four eligible nieces and nephews between the ages of 12 and 15. Bill, Amelia, the four Double Digit cousins and I all traveled to Kansas City on Friday morning.  On Friday afternoon, Bill and Amelia visited with family while I took the Double Digit cousins to Crown Center for some ice-skating and a fun lunch of burgers and shakes at Fritz’s (where your food is delivered on a cool motorized train).  After that, we all went back to the Kalahurkas for some Waldo Pizza, Cupcakes and birthday festivities -- Friday was also Amelia’s first birthday.  It’s hard to believe that, only a year ago, our walking, talking (sort-of) mischief-maker was a tiny 4.5 pound bundle who couldn’t even focus her eyes.  Crazy how fast and how much she has changed!

Saturday and Sunday were ski/snowboarding days in KC.  Because I’ve got one baby to chase and another baby on board, I didn’t get to ski this year.  Bill’s Dad and sister, Katie, did though. So did Bill and, of course, the Double Digit Cousins.  Amelia and I had a good time watching them all go up and down the mountain from the big glass window in the ski lodge.  It was a couple of long days, and the kiddos (and Bill) were pretty exhausted by the end.  I was grateful that Bill’s parents came both days to help me chase Amelia around the ski lodge.  I think that everyone had fun, no one got hurt and, overall, it was a success.

Yesterday was pretty relaxed. I didn’t plan any snow activities – just let the kids take their time sleeping in and packing until noon check-out. Then we drove back into KC for a HUGE BBQ lunch with Bill’s family and Debbie before heading back to the airport. We got home pretty late last night. I’m definitely feeling tired today.

So that was our weekend. I think I also promised an update on little Billy.  We had a couple of good appointments last week. Two more ultrasounds – both confirming, without a doubt, that Billy is a boy.  Below is one of the best ultrasound photos.  As you can see, he’s a little camera shy.  I’m still amazed at the clarity of the ultrasounds these days though. It’s pretty cool stuff.

The doc’s reports were all good. Billy’s anatomy all checked out and he is actually about 4 oz larger than an average baby of his term. I was kinda glad to hear that because I am DEFINITELY more than 4oz bigger than I was with Amelia at this point . . . . . . I have to admit that part of me doesn’t like the idea of gaining the recommended 35 pounds this time around. I keep telling myself that a couple of extra months to lose the weight is still WAY better for both me and the baby than the extra 2 weeks that Amelia had to spend in the NICU.  I hope I still remember that in a few months . . . .

Okay. That’s it for now. A few select photos from our trip below. All of the Double Digit Photos are on the official Double Digit Adventure 2011 page.  Definitely good times!!
