Amelia Tricks

Amelia is going through a lot of changes lately.  Recently, it seems like the light has really come on and she seems to understand most of what is going on around her.  She is picking up words and definitely understanding a lot of words.  The little changes always surprise me -- like this weekend, when she walked up to me, reached out her arms and said, "UP!"  How could I resist?

Amelia is also growing, although still along her own curve.  At her one-year appointment, she weighted in at 17 pounds, 3 ounces.  That puts her in the 3rd percentile (for both height and weight).  Her pediatrician said that it was nothing to worry about though -- as long as she continues to grow, it's okay if she progresses at her own rate.

We had a weekend of beautiful weather in Austin.  Although Bill and I both had to do some catch-up work, we still managed to find some time to get outdoors as a family.  On Saturday, Bill wanted to do a track workout, so Amelia and I accompanied him.  Turns out that the middle of a football field is a great place to play with a toddler.  There's not much that she can get into, but she can run a long way in every direction.  We had fun playing with a ball.  I would roll the ball a few yards, and Amelia would go pick it up and bring it back.  By the end of Bill's workout, we had gotten pretty good at "kicking the ball," but she still doesn't quite understand how to "throw."

On Sunday, Bill wanted to do an afternoon run at town lake, and so Amelia and I accompanied him again.  This time, we just went for a long walk, stopping in a couple of shady spots to let Amelia out of the stroller to play.  She seemed to enjoy looking at the ducks and the other kids playing around the lake.  On Sunday, we also took a separate family outing to the playground at Mueller.  Amelia demonstrated that she can climb all the way to the top of the slide by herself, but she likes to have someone accompany her while actually sliding down.  All-in-all, I think we made the most of the good weather.  Good thing too, because it's supposed to get COLD later this week!

Okay, here are this week's photos.  The first demonstrates the problems that we are still having with "table food."  The second photo shows Amelia in a cute hair bow that I managed to get into her hair (once).  It's a good thing that I got this photo.  She got wise to the hair bow and won't let me get near her with it again.  I know my Mom will appreciate that -- I can remember being wise to hair bows myself . . . .

Finally, here is a link to a short video that shows how Amelia is learning to identify a lot of different objects.  Good times.
