Rainy Days

Amelia is 4 weeks old today.  If she had not arrived early, I would be almost 40 weeks pregnant and approaching my due date.  Pretty weird to think about it that way . . . .

I think this has been the longest stretch of rainy bad weather in Austin for a couple of years -- or maybe it just seems that way because it keeps us cooped up in the house.  Since we brought Amelia home two weeks ago, the sun has only come out on two days, and on both of those days it was too cold to take her outside, so I just opened the curtains and pretended.  This entire week has been especially dreary -- it actually sleeted yesterday.  My big outdoor adventure for the day was to walk to the mailbox and back and to take out the "poopy trash."  The weather problem is compounded some by the fact that Bill is working very hard at school to finish his thesis.  This means that I'm on Amelia duty pretty much 24/7 -- there's no getting out on my own.  I think that if the weather doesn't improve soon, I may go a little stir crazy.

All that being said, there are still a lot good things about being home with Amelia.  She's still growing and eating well -- pretty much right on schedule every 3 hours.  She's also awake more these days, which makes her a lot more fun and also more of a challenge.  I'm getting to be an expert at doing things with one hand.  Yesterday, I accomplished a one-handed tax return.  I think my favorite Amelia moments are when she is awake and manages to focus her little eyes on my face.  When she does this, she makes some funny faces of her own.  It makes me wonder what she's thinking.

I also have my treadmill.  When Amelia naps, I can at least hop on and get in a few walking miles here and there.  I think this small amount of activity has helped me not to go totally nuts.  I've also Netflixed a couple of HBO series.  I've found that I can watch some television while holding Amelia and, even if she is awake, she doesn't cry much as long as I wrap her up and hold her close.  I'm not much of a television person, but watching an episode a day from a series is something that I'm beginning to look forward to.  I just finished "Band of Brothers."  It was pretty good.

Another good thing is Amelia's "wrap," which is kind of like a cloth baby sling that holds her close to my body and leaves my hands free.  Amelia usually likes riding in her sling.  When she's awake, she can watch what's going on and I can take care of things like laundry and dishes.  In fact, she's hanging out in it right now while I type this entry.

Here are a couple new photos of Amelia.  My guess is that she's getting close to six pounds now.  She's starting to fit in some of her "newborn" clothes as long as I roll up the sleeves.  She has even grown out of one of her preemie outfits.  Way to go Amelia!  As you can see from the photos below, however, she has a ways to go before she will fit in the "newborn" socks . . . . right now they are more like knee socks.
